How can I record my sessions?

Written by Imran Ahmed

Pencil Spaces offers two recording options: local recording, which stores recordings on your device, and cloud recording, which saves them online for viewing, sharing, and management.

Local recording

Local recording captures the screen, window, or browser tab you select. You can start, pause, and stop recording during a call, then download the file to your device.

Local recordings are stored in your browser’s cache. If they are lost or corrupted—for example, after clearing your cache—Pencil Spaces cannot recover them. Test recording in your browser before relying on it, and download recordings you want to keep.

Cloud recording

Cloud recording saves sessions directly to Pencil Spaces without using storage on your device. Each recording can capture up to 3 hours, with the whiteboard recorded automatically. Compared with local recording, cloud recording offers:

  • Automatic saving: Recordings are saved online without using device storage or relying on your browser’s cache.

  • Automatic whiteboard capture: The session’s whiteboard is recorded without needing to share your screen.

  • Shared access and management: View, share, and manage recordings from the Recordings Dashboard or session analytics.

There are two ways to record to the cloud:

Access and share cloud recordings

Find your cloud recordings under Analytics → Recordings on your homepage. You can also access them through session analytics within a Space or from Space Manager.

Recording permissions

Institution admins choose whether recording is manual, always-on, or disabled. They can also disable local recording and set access, download, deletion, and sharing permissions for cloud recordings.
