1. Why do I need to do this?
For security reasons, many web browsers and operating systems prevent apps from using your camera and microphone without your permission.
To start video calling on Pencil Spaces, allow the Pencil Spaces app to access your devices' Camera and Microphone for the call. You can find instructions on how to do this for different devices and browsers below.
2. [Desktop] Setting up on macOS
The steps below apply only if you're using macOS and Google Chrome. You'll only need to do this once, but you'll also need to follow the instructions in Section 3 to grant permissions within your browser as well.
Look for your device's System Preferences.
βChoose Security & Privacy and enter the Privacy tab.
βClick through "Camera", "Microphone" and "Screen Recording" permissions and ensure that the checkbox next to "Google Chrome" is filled in.
β
βIf this is not the case or if you have recently updated your Mac,
βyou should disable and re-enable the Google Chrome checkbox. Click the lock icon at the bottom left to make changes to your System preferences. You will be asked for your password.
βOnce you have entered your password, make sure to enable, or re-enable "Google Chrome" from the list of options. You will be asked to quit & re-open Google Chrome. Then, just save the changes and open Pencil Spaces in your browser!
βIf you run into any issues related to Screen Sharing in Pencil Spaces, see this article for further reference.
3. [Desktop] Setting up your browser
Ensure your browser has the necessary permissions to access your Camera and Microphone.
Please click the link for the relevant section below to find instructions for your browser.
β
Now, verify that everything is working
βClick the green Start/Join call button at the top right corner of your screen.
βIf your permissions are correctly enabled, your video will load successfully. Below, you can select your speaker, microphone, and webcam for the video call to adjust your input and output devices.
βAnother way to test your camera, microphone, and speaker or to change your input/output device settings is by Audio and video settings.
βClick on the 3 dots under your video feed
βFrom the dropdown menu, choose Audio and video settings
β
For your video, it will load once you select the correct camera.
βNext, check your microphone. If you see Sound detected!, it indicates that your microphone is working.
βFor speakers, click the Test Speakers button. If you hear a chime sound, confirms that your speaker is functioning properly.
βOnce everything is configured as per your liking, click on Done.
