How can I tell if my device is slow?

Devices slow down when an app uses too much memory or processing power.

Signs of system strain include:

  • Notifications about low memory or high CPU usage.

  • Crackly audio or grainy video.

  • Delayed actions, like messages taking longer to send.

  • Missed events or being out of sync with others in the Space.

What to do if your device is slow or laggy?

If you're experiencing system issues, try these steps to improve performance:

  1. Close unnecessary tabs and apps

Having multiple tabs or apps open can slow down your device. Closing them frees up resources for Pencil Spaces to run smoothly.

  2. Turn off your camera and incoming video

    1. To reduce strain on your device, turn off your own video and your participants' video feeds. You can do this in your audio and video settings.

    2. From there, check the box labeled "Turn off your video and participant video to improve performance". As the name suggests, this helps improve your device's performance. Then, click “Done” to save the changes.

  3. Unplug high-definition displays or extra monitors

Disconnecting additional screens can free up system resources and improve performance.

  4. Upgrade to the latest browser or system software

Make sure you're using the most up-to-date version of your browser and operating system. Updates often include performance improvements, bug fixes, and better compatibility with applications like Pencil Spaces.

  5. Restart your device

If none of the above steps work, try restarting your device and rejoining the call on Pencil Spaces. This ensures that no other resource-heavy programs are running in the background, allowing Pencil Spaces to perform more smoothly.
