If you’ve chosen to share your audio on the call, Pencil Spaces will show that it detects your audio by displaying the blue speaker indicator.

If you are speaking while you are unmuted, and if you do not see the speaking indicator, you may instead see a notification like the one below.

If you run into this issue, Pencil Spaces can't detect audio from your microphone. You can follow the steps below to troubleshoot and resolve your issue.

Disabling hardware muting

Certain devices, such as integrated microphones in laptops or external headsets, may have a physical mute button on the device.

  • On laptops, this may take the form of a button on the keyboard (typically on the Functions row). In the example below, you can re-enable the mic by pressing fn + F12 together.

  • On headsets this may appear as a switch or a microphone button on the device. When disabled, the mute button will typically show an red LED indicator to indicate that it is disabled (or a green indicator to indicate that it is enabled).

If your device has a hardware mute, please ensure that it is un-muted. You may need to consult the manual for your device manufacturer.

Increase microphone volume

Certain operating systems allow you to set microphone input volume in the operating system settings. Please ensure this input volume is set to a level where your speech is detected on Pencil Spaces.

On Mac, you can access this setting by going to Sound > Output & Input > Input

On Windows, you can follow the official guide here

Unplugging/plugging in external hardware

If you’re using an external source for audio, such as a headset, try unplugging and re-plugging the device. If the external device is connected via Bluetooth, try disconnecting and reconnecting the device.

Changing your microphone

Make sure Pencil Spaces is picking up your intended audio source. You can check this by clicking the three dots at the bottom right corner of your video feed. From there, select “Audio and video settings”.

You’ll notice that under “Microphone”, it says “No sound detected”. Click the dropdown menu beside your current audio output, and try changing it to a different source.

Change your microphone source until you find that audio is now being detected.
