Troubleshooting no input from camera or microphone

Learn how to troubleshoot your camera or microphone when no input feed is detected.

If you notice the following error message (or something similar) while trying to start your call, it means we're having difficulties starting your camera or your microphone.

To address this issue, please follow the steps below. In each case, go back to Pencil Spaces and refresh the page to check whether the error resolves:

  1. Close other applications
    โ€‹

    • Check if any other video conferencing/calling application is active in the background alongside Pencil Spaces; you may have trouble enabling your video feed because the camera is in use. To fix this, close the other application completely before trying to turn on your video in Pencil Spaces.

  2. Reconnect External Devices
    โ€‹

    • If you are using a webcam or an external microphone, try unplugging it and plugging it back into your device

  3. Update your Browser
    โ€‹

    • Verify that your browser is up-to-date.
      โ€‹

    • If your're using Google Chrome or any other compatible browsers, ensure that your browser is updated to the latest version.
      โ€‹

    • Restart your browser after updating.

  4. Update Drivers/OS
    โ€‹

    • Ensure that your camera and microphone drivers are up to date.
      โ€‹

    • Verify that your OS is up-to-date (see here for Mac or Windows computers), and try to restart your computer.
      โ€‹

  5. Check settings in Pencil Spaces
    โ€‹

    • Within Pencil Spaces, look for any settings that may allow you to choose your camera or microphone manually. Ensure the correct devices are selected in the app.|

  6. Test on Other Platforms
    โ€‹

    • In rare cases, following the steps above may still not fix the issue of your camera or microphone. If this is the case, please visit the following website to test if your camera is working: Link here.

    • Note: If your camera or microphone doesnโ€™t work on this website, the issue might be due to software or hardware errors unrelated to Pencil Spaces. In that case:

      • Try joining Pencil Spaces from another computer.

      • Alternatively, select a different microphone or camera.
