We've prepared a guide with the most common errors that users can encounter while sharing Google Documents in Pencil Spaces.

1. Access Not Provided

Sometimes, you can encounter an error that looks like the following image within their iFrame:

In this scenario, please ask the owner of the Google Document to provide access to the Document, then refresh your Spaces window. This should resolve the encountered issue.

Providing Access

To enable access for other participants in the Space, you will need to open the Google Document in a separate tab, and ensure that the file is shared either with the people in the Space, or via a link.

Type docs.google.com in a separate tab or paste the same File link into your browser.

Navigate to the document you would like to collaborate on.

Once you've opened the file you would like to collaborate on in Pencil Spaces, click the blue "Share" button in the top right corner.

Note: You will need to either own or have editing access to share the document.

Once you click the share button, you can either invite specific people, or you can enable link sharing for the document. Then, click the blue "Send" or "Done" button.

Once the document is shared with everyone in your space, you can go back to Pencil Spaces, and try reloading the iFrame, or adding the document again. Follow the instructions here to learn how.

i) What to do if you see a 400 Error, and use Microsoft Edge or Brave

If you see the above message when adding a document to the whiteboard and you are using Microsoft Edge or Brave, you can either Disable Tracking Prevention or you can switch to Google Chrome.

Switching to Google Chrome

Since this issue is unique to Microsoft Edge and Brave, you can avoid it by using Pencil Spaces with Google Chrome. If you don't yet have Google Chrome, you can install the latest version for your device at this link.

If you don't want to switch your browser, you can follow the instructions below.

Disabling Tracking Prevention

The following process applies if you use Microsoft Edge or Brave.

Once you open your browser, click the three dots or "Settings and More" at the top right corner and select "Settings."

In Settings, search "Cookies and site data." Select "Manage and delete cookies and site data" in Microsoft Edge. If you are using Brave, select "Cookies and other site data."

Under Cookies, select "Allow sites to save and read cookie data" or "Allow all cookies."

Finally, restart your browser. Once you open Pencil Spaces, you should be able to collaborate on Google Documents without seeing this 400 error.

2. Not Logged In

Users will also occasionally encounter an error screen on their iFrame that looks similar to the image below:

For an iFrame to function as intended, users need to be logged into the Google account with which they desire to open Google Documents. As a result, you'll need to ensure that you're logged into your preferred Google account on a separate tab in your browser. Once you've logged in, refresh your Spaces window to resolve the issue at hand.

3. Invalid URL

In very rare scenarios, users encounter an "Invalid URL" error that looks like the following image:

To resolve this issue, please delete the iFrame that you were attempting to use, and create a new one to try again.

4. Refused to Connect

If the Google Document loads as a blank screen, or it says "Refused to connect", this means that iFraming is not supported. Read this article for more details.

In most cases with Google Documents, this screen will appear if you attempt to open the Google Docs Home screen instead of a specific document. To resolve the issue, close the window by clicking the "X" at the top right side of the Google Docs window in your Space.

Then, import the document again using a valid link to a specific Document.
