Quick Links

1. Why am I seeing this error

In certain cases, you may be presented with an error screen when setting up your iFrame. These errors may be caused by the following reasons:

  1. Your link is not a valid URL

Please verify that the link you added is a valid URL - e.g., wikipedia.org. You can verify this by checking if the link opens correctly in a new tab on your browser.

  2. Your link starts with http:// and not https://

Please verify that your link URL starts with "https://". For security reasons, links starting with "http://" cannot be rendered on Pencil Spaces.

  3. Check that you're logged in correctly on the website

Some websites, such as Google Docs, require that you are logged in first before you can embed documents in Pencil Spaces. To resolve this:

    • Visit the same URL you intend to embed on a new tab on the same browser. You can open a new tab by pressing Cmd / Ctrl + T with your browser open

    • Verify that you are logged in correctly. To check this, you should see the content you're expecting to share on your screen when you visit the URL

  4. Your website doesn't allow itself to be embedded

Certain websites, such as Asana, prevent themselves from being embedded in other applications. If this is the case, unfortunately, you won't be able to embed your website via iFrame. You'll know a website is not embeddable if you see an error message when creating an iFrame, or if the iFrame loads, but renders an error similar to the one in the image below.

You should consider using the collaborative browser instead to import this website into Pencil Spaces.

(Advanced) You can verify that a link is embeddable by visiting this iFrame tester, and pasting your URL in the text box and clicking "Render iframe". If you see something similar to the image below, your iFrame is not embeddable.

2. iFrame app not loading (e.g., Nearpod)

If students only see a spinner, verify if the "app link" has been shared with those students.

If the link has been shared but the app is still stuck in an unrecoverable state, follow the guide here.

Please Note: Refreshing only applies to the current user

3. Resolve the Issue

To resolve the issue, follow the steps above to ensure that you are using a valid link. Then, close the iFrame by clicking the X at the top right side of the iFrame window

Then re-open the iFrame by selecting "Import an iFrame" in the Apps list and enter a valid URL that can be embedded as an iFrame.
