Virtual backgrounds are a really great tool allowing you to maintain the privacy of your work location. Pencil Spaces currently does not offer virtual backgrounds and effects, however, there is a way to add a virtual background to any video calling application using a tool called ChromaCam.

Installing ChromaCam

The ChromaCam application can be downloaded from your Google Chrome browser. Google ā€œChromaCamā€ and click on the website.

From there, download the latest version of ChromaCam suited to your computer model.

Once ChromaCam is downloaded, you can set your virtual background before you join a call or after you join a call.

Adjusting your audio and video settings

When you try and start a call in Pencil Spaces, you are first taken to an audio and video preview where you can turn off and on your audio or video. From this preview, you can directly access your audio and video settings. Click the ā€œAdjust video and audioā€ button.

Your video and audio settings allow you to adjust where your picture and sound are coming from. To switch your video to your ChromaCam fed, click the dropdown arrow beside your camera settings.

Select ChromaCam as the camera you want to be using on your call.

A pop-up will appear asking you to use ChromaCam with an existing Google account, sign in using your email and password, or create an account. Select the option that is best suited to your situation.

Once you are logged in, you will be taken to your ChromaCam account. If this is your first time using ChromaCam, you will first have to grant ChromaCam access to your computerā€™s camera. From there, you can start setting up your virtual background!

Setting up your background in Chromacam

ChromaCam gives you access to a variety of different virtual backgrounds. Some of these backgrounds are limited to users with ChromaCam pro (these backgrounds are represented by a lock icon).

Make sure you turn on your ChromaCam Preview. This will allow you to see your virtual background which is what allows you to see your virtual background in Pencil Spaces.

If you would like to keep your background more minimalistic, you can also choose to simply blur your existing background or use a transparent background.

ChromaCam has other unique features. You can flip your background by turning on the ā€œMirror My Backgroundā€ switch. You are also able to rotate your image on the screen by turning on the ā€œRotate 90*ā€ switch.

Once you are satisfied with your adjustment, you are ready to return to Spaces and start your call!

Starting a call

When you return to your Space you will see in your video feed that your background has adjusted to mimic the changes you have made within your ChromaCam account. Once you are happy with your audio and video setting adjustments, click the blue ā€œDoneā€ button.

Make sure your camera is on and start your call.

Now everyone on the call with be able to see your ChromaCam background.

Making changes during a call

If you want to make any changes to your background while on the call, just return to your ChromaCam account and make your adjustments from there. Any changes you make will update in real-time.
